Reddit CEO Steve Huffman has reignited the debate over the value of user-generated content in artificial intelligence, stating that large language models (LLMs) “would not exist as we know them” without Reddit’s vast repository of human conversations.
Speaking at the Fast Company Most Innovative Companies Summit, Huffman described Reddit’s content as “modern oil” for the AI era, emphasizing that authentic discussions across millions of communities have become one of the most valuable training resources for today’s AI models.
The comments come as technology companies continue investing billions in generative AI while competing for access to high-quality datasets.
Reddit Claims a Central Role in AI Training
According to Huffman, Reddit has become one of the largest and most influential sources of publicly available human conversations used to train AI models.
He noted that Reddit is not only a significant source of training data but is also among the most frequently cited platforms by AI systems. The platform’s diverse discussions, covering nearly every imaginable topic, provide the real-world context and natural language patterns that modern LLMs rely on.
Huffman argued that artificial intelligence ultimately depends on human intelligence, explaining that AI models learn by identifying patterns in existing human-generated content. Reddit’s authentic conversations make it particularly valuable compared to more structured or curated sources.

Huffman also suggested that Reddit’s voting system naturally discourages low-quality AI-generated content.
According to him, users are increasingly recognizing and downvoting generic AI-written posts, helping maintain the authenticity that makes Reddit valuable both for users and AI developers.
This community-driven moderation could become an important advantage as more online platforms struggle with AI-generated spam.
